Photographing Mirages and Heat Shimmer

That distinctive shimmer you see above a road or desert ground in blazing sunshine isn’t a lens fault or a focusing problem — it’s a genuine optical phenomenon, one you can learn to photograph deliberately rather than simply put up with.

Understanding the phenomenon before shooting it

Hot air rising above a scorching surface (asphalt, sand, a car bonnet) is less dense than the surrounding air, and slightly bends the light passing through it — it’s this constantly shifting bend that creates the characteristic shimmering effect, sometimes even producing a mirage, a reflection of the sky that mimics a puddle of water in the distance.

Don’t try to correct this blur

Faced with this shimmer, autofocus often struggles to lock, and the instinct is to assume a focusing problem — in reality, no setting removes this effect, since it happens in the air itself, before light even reaches the lens. It’s best to accept it as part of the scene, rather than repeatedly attempting pointless refocusing.

A telephoto lens amplifies the effect

The longer the focal length, the more visible and exaggerated the air-shimmer effect becomes — a telephoto lens used to photograph a distant road or desert, in the heat of midday, considerably strengthens this shimmer compared to a wide-angle lens, where the effect usually stays too subtle to exploit.

The best conditions, and their limits

Intense midday heat, over a surface that stores heat well (asphalt, sand, sheet metal), offers the most favourable conditions — but the result remains largely unpredictable from one shot to the next. Trying repeatedly, slightly varying the angle and the time of day, remains the only way to get an image where this air shimmer becomes a genuine subject rather than a mere accident.
